Description of proposed partnership
Humor, cartoons, comics are an expression of European cultural diversity as well as a common cultural background.
The word "cartoon" has various meanings, based on several very different forms of visual art and illustration. The actual general meaning is that of humorous illustrations in magazines and newspapers.
Everywhere in Europe caricatures, cartoons and comics are a way to describe emotions, feelings or situations, political matters, sport- and cultural events in a universally comprehensible way. They offer a chance to find valuable access to other cultures and improve understanding for common heritage of European nations.
They are not bound to one single topic but can be used for teaching e.g. politic, history or languages at all different levels of the European reference framework and at any age.
The teams are aware of the unique opportunity offered by this topic to enable large groups of learners to reflect about the influence of humor, caricatures, cartoons and comics in the evolution of the European society.
Learners in Adult Education including (senior) universities, lifelong learning institutions will be given the possibility to improve their knowledge about the countries involved in the project in studying the material choosen by the tutors or brought by themselves in class. They will also create their own cartoons or/and caricatures to describe events or situations they are confronted to. Fighting against prejudices is one of the main goals.
This project is funded with support from the European Commission. The content reflects the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.
Approach:
To find appropriate motivating mechanisms for adult students and to take up educational effort as well as ensuring authentic intercultural approach of the training provision, the choice of pictorial material which discloses other cultural perspectives and does so in a humorous way is an excellent approach to both teaching other cultures and respective languages.
In addition, such exchange is best done via the Internet which facilitates an implementation of an interdisciplinary curriculum. Approaches chosen in common by the teams to realise the above goals:
1. to integrate the topic in everyday courses (languages or other if possible)with learners of all age
2. to create own cartoons / caricatures, eventually using internet resources
3. to organise workshops to exchange and discuss cartoons/caricatures created by students in the partnership countries
2. some groups will work in a computer lab and practice ICT skills (basics of graphic design and on-line communication) as well as foreign language skills in an intercultural context
3. to involve learners in transnational meetings as a following to the workshops when possible
4. to propose to learners the (re)creation of an intercultural workshop curriculum for a technology enhanced language training (digital cartoons/ caricatures exchanged via the Internet)
5. to use cartoons and caricatures related to different cultures to minimize prejudices and improve learners? cultural skills
6. to organize contacts between learners of partners? countries to enable them to work together on some specific topic
7. to create didactical resources
8. to use self-created cartoons to spread EU priorities/ideas
Objectives of the partnership:
1. To establish close cooperation with other institutions offering continuing education on an essential topic
2. To improve each partner? s training provision through the exchange of teaching ideas and good practice
3. To give colleagues with different cultural background the opportunity to share experiences and to prepare pedagogical tools in common
4. To sensitise learners for the different approaches in humour, comics or cartoons in relation to the cultural background and historical context of a country
5. To point out the importance of the intercultural communication in Europe to be able to understand the way of thinking and of dealing with situations through a humorous approach. What is considered as funny? What is allowed in caricatures, especially in political ones?
6. To activate the use of visual perception in order to build up knowledge, to improve language skills and intuitive learning, to enlarge the cultural competences and to fight against prejudices, stereotypes and xenophobia
7. To stress the positive side of recreation and fun when learning and to invite learners to discover again their own creativity
8. To raise the awareness of the common cultural background of Europe
